Possibilities of Dialogue

Co-created and performed by Toronto-based dance artist David Norsworthy and NYC-based dance artist Marielis Garcia, Possibilities of Dialogue is an exchange of energy and awareness. Inspired by the parallels between making a dance and having a conversation, the performance is an abstracted collaborative creative process; moments of listening, curiosity, disagreement and spontaneity unfold through movement and text. It is often playful, lively and physically virtuosic, sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes surprising and almost always responsive to and inclusive of the audience. Audience members are welcome to observe and interact through the invitations that are offered.

This New York CIty studio performance is produced by MG DanceArts and supported by Emily and Sean Wentworth, Joan Woodworth, Nancy Wells, Jay Wentworth and Deborah and Charles Adleman.

Possibilities of Dialogue was originally developed with the support of Dance Initiative (Carbondale, USA), Kaatsbaan International Dance Centre (Tivoli, USA), ArtsOnSite (New York, USA) , Inception to Exhibition (New York, USA) and Culture Mill (Saxapahaw, USA). An early April performance in Toronto was made possible by North York Arts, NYA’s Evolve! Program and TOES FOR DANCE. That production was part of the DanceWorks CoWorks Series. Special thanks to City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts for their support in the creative process of this work and for their support in the Toronto Performances.

A collaboration with Toronto-based dance artist David Norsworthy, this project is driven by the question: How can we facilitate an artistic dialogue that is responsive to and inclusive of the audience?

The work of this project is to search for a way to interact and co-create with our audience and each other that doesn’t succumb to prescribed solutions that aim to generate a specific outcome. Instead, our interest lies in pursuing our curiosities and creative impulses with rigour and commitment while allowing the “conversation” to unfold in a way that is organic and emergent.

In the spring of 2017, during a residency at Dance Initiative (Carbondale, USA) which included two creative process workshops for the community David and I created the ground work for Possibilities of Dialogue, which was then performed again at t Kaatsbaan International Dance Center (Tivoli, USA).

Fall 2017, we were supported by residency through Inception to Exhibition and ArtsOnSite (New York, USA) and performed at six high schools through TOES FOR DANCE (Toronto, Canada). David and I taught six masterclasses at the high schools in conjunction with our performances.

In April of 2019, we presented a full-evening immersive and participatory performance experience at the Toronto Centre for the Arts Studio Theatre, co-produced by North York Arts and co-presented by DanceWorks and TOES FOR DANCE and with support from the Toronto Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
