“Fact of Being Carried On” (2016), performed at Signal Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, centered on the act of performing practice as an intentional and visible process for the audience. This work challenged traditional performance conventions and continues to influence how I reframe failure, emphasizing practice over the final product.
In this piece, three dancers were given ten minutes to generate phrase material in front of the audience, followed by two-minute breaks. Afterward, they were tasked with collectively ‘performing’ the created phrases as a completed "piece." The chance-based nature of this process meant that every performance was guided by in-the-moment decisions, creating a dynamic, unpredictable experience.
Our individual phrases often didn’t align perfectly with those of others, yet we coexisted within the work, embracing and owning the developments from our multiple ten-minute practices. This process reinforced the idea that imperfection and spontaneity could coexist with intentionality and structure, shaping a work that thrived on collaboration, adaptability, and shared vulnerability.
